The number of unemployed Aboriginal people in Saskatchewan fell by 24 per cent between 2001 and 2006.

That’s the word from Statistics Canada this week.

The unemployment rate among Saskatchewan Aboriginal people fell from 21.9 per cent in 2001 to 16.7 per cent in 2006.

Doug Elliott, the publisher of SaskTrends Monitor, notes the employment stats on some reserves doubled since the last census.

However, he notes the unemployment rate among non-Aboriginal people is still much lower than the Aboriginal rate.

It fell from 3.6 per cent to 3.2 per cent.
