One of Canada’s most renowned Aboriginal authors will be honoured at an awards dinner tonight.

Basil Johnston is receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Anskohk Aboriginal Literature Festival gala awards and dinner.

The festival is put on by the Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company.

Johnston has written more than 20 books and is a strong proponent of promoting his culture, the Anishinaubae.

He has also created audio tapes for children and adults to learn the language.

Johnston says he didn’t believe it when he was notified of the award.

He also says he is encouraged when he sees how many young Aboriginal writers there are.
