Aboriginal Affairs Gets Name Change

The provincial department of Aboriginal Affairs is getting a new name today.

It will now be called the department of First Nations and Metis Relations.

And unlike before, it will be separate from Government Relations.

Minister responsible Maynard Sonntag says the stand-alone department will allow greater attention to be given to the government’s approach to Aboriginal issues.

Premier Lorne Calvert says the department will put particular emphasis on Aboriginal education and participation in the economy.

The province says another key area of the department’s role will be to improve relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
