In the run-up to the Vancouver Olympics, northern Saskatchewan’s regional library system is encouraging northerners to exercise both their bodies and their minds.

From January 11 to February 26 — almost to the end of the 2010 Olympic Games — northern schools and communities can collect points for every 15 minutes they read, with the goal of winning a prize in the 19th annual Northern Reading Program.

Harriet Roy, assistant director of the Pahkisimon Nuye?ah Library System, is organizing this year’s event — which is tying into the Olympic Games with the theme “Reading for the Sport of It”.

Roy says there are definite parallels between the two pursuits.

In addition to reading, billboard and writing contests, this year’s program also includes sports-related activities, and participants will be encouraged to read more about their favourite athletes, sports history and, of course, the Olympics.
