The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations has declared 2005 the Year of the First Nations Woman.

The declaration came yesterday in the form of a motion made at the FSIN’s fall assembly in Swift Current.

The resolution was forwarded from the Prince Albert Grand Council’s Women’s Commission, which launched the call for the declaration at the PAGC annual assembly earlier this week.

The resolution is in direct response to the recently released report from Amnesty International condemning violence against Aboriginal women.

FSIN Chief Alphonse Bird says breaking the cycle of violence starts at home.

The federation’s resolution will be forwarded to the Assembly of First Nations confederacy meeting in December for the same recognition at the national level.
