Water from Mine Pit to Enter Wollaston Lake

Cameco has been granted tentative approval to release water from an open pit at a uranium mine back into a northern lake.

The A-zone deposit is part of the Rabbit Lake operation along the shore of Wollaston Lake that’s due for decommissioning.

The pit has been enclosed by a dike that keeps water inside from mixing with the lake. Cameco has been given the OK to remove a section of that dike.

Spokesman Lyle Krahn says the company is confident that water quality shouldn’t be a concern to local residents.

Still, Krahn admits it hasn’t stopped residents in the area from asking about whether the water is safe.

Cameco and federal regulators are in the process of developing how and when decommissioning will actually proceed.
