A canoe trek by 25 women from Cumberland House and The Pas to raise diabetes awareness was a success.

Along with putting the spotlight on diabetes, the group was also able to raise some cash donations that will stay right in the community.  The money will be to used purchase medic-alert bracelets and supplies for diabetics.

Group spokesperson Rene Carriere says the canoes themselves will be left in the two communities for public use.

Carriere hopes this will encourage the community to fight diabetes by living a healthier lifestyle.

As for next year, Carriere says plans are already in the works to continue bringing awareness to this devastating disease.
