Lac La Ronge will play host to its first open fish derby in nearly four years later this month.

Senator Myles Venne School’s athletics department has organized a fundraising catch and release derby for the weekend of June 28th and 29th with proceeds aimed at purchasing sports equipment and subsidizing tournament travel costs.

SMVS Husky hockey coach Don Carriere is hoping the event will be successful.

Carriere notes the importance athletics plays in providing healthy lifestyle alternatives to his students.

The fish derby will offer a first prize payout of 15-hundred dollars for both biggest walleye and northern pike.

Those wishing to enter the derby can do so at Senator Myles Venne School or at the La Ronge Motor Hotel.

Co-organizer Eugene Mirasty is hoping the derby will raise anywhere between 1 to 10 thousand dollars for the school’s athletics program.
