Despite the growing number of human cases of West Nile virus in Saskatchewan, Northern Saskatchewan remains unaffected.

Northern Medical Health Officer Dr. James Irvine says even though there are almost 30 confirmed or suspect cases in the province, all of those people infected with the virus have been from southern or central Saskatchewan.

Irvine says northern health officials continue to monitor the mosquito population to determine what is the likelihood that the virus will eventually show up in the North.

Irvine also says that it’s still important for people to remain diligent in their efforts to prevent being bitten by mosquitos because it’s still unknown if, or when, the virus will show up in the North.
