A northern area director for the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan feels the forestry industry has a better understanding of Metis concerns following a conference in Beauval last Friday.

The North West Metis Council organized the meeting between Metis groups and large forestry companies that operate in the North.

Alex Maurice feels Metis have not received as much attention as other groups from the forestry industry, and says that needs to change.

Maurice is pleased that the forestry companies represented on Friday seemed intent on including northern Metis residents in their future plans.

Maurice says they also had a chance to discuss what will happen when Metis hunters on the west side begin hunting this fall in areas where there is clear-cutting nearby.

Organizers of last week’s meeting plan to make it an annual event.
