At least one northern leader is optimistic a recent visit by a Northern Saskatchewan delegation to Fort McMurray will pay off.

North West Development Council Co-chair Isadore Desjarlais accompanied Northern Affairs Minister Buckley Belanger to the northern Alberta city earlier this week.

The delegation was there to lobby Alberta government, municipal and industry leaders to build a highway there that would complete a link from Fort McMurray to La Loche.

Desjarlais says Alberta Northern Development Minister Pearl Calahasen has thrown her support behind the proposal, and outlined for the delegation what they would need to do to make it a reality.

Desjarlais says they were also promised letters of support from tourism groups and Fort McMurray city council. He points out that the road proposal is quickly climbing on the city’s priority list.

Overall, Desjarlais is pleased he and the others had a chance to connect with people of influence in Alberta.

Desjarlais is targetting 2005 as the year the link to Fort McMurray might finally be built.
