Churchill River MP Rick Laliberte is urging Metis hunters to practice responsibility in the wake of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling on Metis hunting rights.

Right now, the only Metis hunters in Saskatchewan with the right to hunt out of season and without a licence are subsistence hunters in the province’s North.

But, whenever the rest of the province’s Metis are given the green light, Laliberte hopes they will show responsibility and not threaten the resource.

Having said that, Laliberte says history has shown that the Metis know how to practice conservation while hunting.

Laliberte also feels sorting out future guidelines for Metis hunters would be a perfect job for the resource management councils he has been proposing for the North.
