Churchill River MP Rick Laliberte racked up the most travel expenses of any Member of Parliament in the 2001-2002 fiscal year.

The finding comes from the House of Commons finance and human resources directorate.

According to the report, Laliberte amassed over 243-thousand dollars in travel expense claims that year — still well short of the nearly one-million dollars MPs are allowed to claim if they claim the maximum of 64 return trips at 15-thousand dollars a trip.

The report does point out that Laliberte’s expenses are a reflection of the sheer size of the Churchill River constituency and its distance from Ottawa.
