Churchill River M-P Rick Laliberte is expressing relief that the House of Commons adjourned for the summer before voting on the First Nations Governance Act.

M-Ps were expected to vote on the contentious piece of legislation this week, but the government abruptly adjourned the recent session a week early this past Friday.

Laliberte says he hasn’t been told directly why a vote on Bill C-7 didn’t take place, but says it’s clear First Nations leaders don’t want any part of it in its current form.

Laliberte says not voting on the bill right now buys the government more time to consult with the First Nations community.
