The launch of the latest book on the Dene took place today at the Dene gathering in Black Lake.
Volume 2 of The Dene Elders Project is entitled “They Will Have Our Words” and was co-written by Lynda Holland and Mary-Ann Kkailther.
It’s a compilation of interesting stories taken from audio tapes made by Larry Hewitt while he and his family toured Dene territory in the Far North from 1977 to 1979.
Holland will be on hand at the gathering to launch the book, which she says is a real cross-section of the Dene culture, life and language.
Holland says a number of groups have been very supportive of her book, including Saskatchewan Education, which will be sending books to every school in Northern Saskatchewan.
Holland says the next phase of the project will see the best of the interviews in Dene that are currently on cassette transferred to CD.
Holland says she is already fundraising for that project, which she expects will take anywhere from 2 to 4 years.
