A man accused of stabbing two people on the Little Red River reserve will be allowed to temporarily return there as part of his bail arrangement.

26-year-old Jackie Dale McKenzie was charged with two counts of aggravated assault after the weekend of July 5th, when two Sturgeon Lake band members were transported to hospital with non life-threatening stab wounds.

Today, crown prosecutors and defense lawyers took turns arguing whether McKenzie should be released on bail or not.

The judge agreed to the defense’s request and directed McKenzie into the care of a healing lodge, but also ruled he would be eligible to stay with his aunt on the reserve when not in the custody of the lodge.

Outside the courthouse, Gloria McKenzie told reporters she was relieved with the decision.

McKenzie says her nephew is a good person that doesn’t go looking for trouble, but has had a tough time recently.

Jackie McKenzie will next appear in court on October 1st.
