A tiny resort community north of La Ronge has become Saskatchewan’s first FireSmart community.

The recognition came Saturday during Canada’s first National Wildfire Community Preparedness Day.

A new wildfire information sign was unveiled, and there was also a community-wide FireSmart yard cleanup.

The acting president of the local FireSmart committee, Shaun Bergsveinson, says the new sign will keep locals and campers aware of fire conditions.

“Whether a fire ban is on . . . . we want to keep all that information at all times.  Being in a park area with campsites and stuff, it’s not just only us that’s there — there’s a lot of people camping there.  And we wanted to have information available so that people can know what’s going on.  Is there a high risk? Not a high risk?  What’s happening.”

Wadin Bay was recognized under the FireSmart program after completing a wildfire risk assessment, appointing a FireSmart committee, and creating and implementing a plan to reduce the risks identified.
